Karen in Bradley, near Stafford installed a wood pellet boiler to replace her oil boiler. It is a Kunzel pellet boiler, installed by 3G energi, at the time the sole suppliers of that boiler. It runs the
central heating in her family dormer bungalow. During the summer hot water is supplied by a Solartwin solar thermal panel. The boiler has a microprocessor controller which maximises efficiency and makes it easy to use. The pellets are fed automatically into the boiler at a controlled rate.
Karen says “We order the wood pellets from Renewable Fuels about 5 times a year depending of course on the severity of the winter. The wood pellets have to be of good quality or else they clog up the boiler. We store the load in individual 16kg bags in the garage. It works out around £1250.00 a year to run – not cheap, but cheaper than oil at today’s prices, and it’s carbon neutral. The ash from the boiler needs to be emptied once a month during the cold period and we put it onto the garden.”
