Derrington is set to become the first 'low-carbon community' in Stafford Borough. The village, on the outskirts of Stafford, is hoping to radically cut its carbon footprint and set an example to other communities. The initial phase of the project benefits from funding secured through the Borough Council, and will see a year-long series of events and activities with the aim of introducing more sustainable approaches to life in 21st century Staffordshire
Launch Event
A steering group has been formed consisting of enthusiastic villagers, and the views of local inhabitants have been canvassed with the aid of a questionnaire. The results of this will help to determine the course of the project. Things really got underway with the Launch Event on Saturday 30 May, held in the Village Hall. A host of local groups took part, providing advice and information on topics such as energy efficiency, making compost, cutting waste, and reusing furniture and other household items. A 'clinic' by Dr Bike ensured that cyclists could get their machines in tip-top shape for summer!
Richard Davies evening
An audience of nearly 40 people listened attentively to Richard Davies of Marches Energy Agency, who gave an inspirational presentation in Derrington Village Hall on 14 July. He outlined the threats posed by climate change, and the challenges we face in changing to a low-carbon society. But he stressed the vital importance of grassroots projects such as Derrington, in setting an example for others to follow.
